Short Rotation

Because trees take years to mature before harvesting, a key focus of ArborGen has been to develop products that enable our customers to shorten the rotation cycle of trees while maintaining wood quality and yield.  By shortening the rotation cycle of a tree, our customers are able to harvest earlier, allowing them to receive an earlier return on their invested capital, reduce their costs per rotation and make the land available sooner for replanting or for alternative uses. As a result, they are able to improve their returns.  We are currently developing Short Rotation Loblolly Pine, Short Rotation Radiata Pine, Short Rotation Populus, and Short Rotation tropical Eucalyptus products.

Short Rotation Loblolly Pine
Our Short Rotation Loblolly Pine product is being developed for the United States and Brazil.  In the United States, ArborGen is targeting a reduction in the rotation length of Loblolly Pine from 23 years to 20 years for the first generation of this product with future generations of this product targeting reductions to 16 years while improving wood quality and yield.  In Brazil, ArborGen is targeting a reduction in the rotation from 18 years to 14 years for the first generation and to 10 years for the next generation of this product while improving wood quality and yield.

Short Rotation Radiata Pine
In New Zealand and Australia, ArborGen is a targeting a reduction in the rotation length of Radiata Pine from 28 years to 22 years and to 18 years for the next generation of this product while improving wood quality and yield.

Short Rotation Populus
Our Short Rotation Populus product combines elite germplasm and growth genes to reduce the rotation from 12 years to eight years for the first generation and to six years for the next generation of this product.  Yield targets for our first generation short rotation populus product include an increase to 14 to 17 green tons/acre/year for traditional pulpwood management systems and to 15 to 18 green tons/acre/year for a biomass management system.

Short Rotation Eucalyptus
Our Short Rotation Eucalyptus product is designed to increase the growth rate of elite Eucalyptus germplasm and enable the harvesting of the wood in five years versus the current seven year rotation with a corresponding increase in productivity to 25 to 30 green tons/acre/year.  Improving productivity will not only benefit the pulp and paper producers in Brazil and the United States, but should also generate value to the Brazilian charcoal industry.
