The average American's view of the natural communities of the southeastern U.S. is that it is comprised mainly of swamps, alligators and large, old moss-hung cypress trees. In actuality, the early settlers found a land full of tall Pine trees growing in sandy soil, with very few trees growing underneath large stands.
One hundred and fifty years ago, Longleaf was the dominant Pine stretching through nine states from Virginia to Texas. But since then, from what seemed at one time to be an unending supply of Longleaf, its range has been greatly diminished.
ArborGen is working diligently to change that. We produce millions of containerized Longleaf Pine seedlings annually. ArborGen also supports the Longleaf Pine Alliance in their efforts to return the tree to its former abundance by educating the landowner on the benefits of this species.
